According to a 2019 study by caring.com:

  • 76 percent of respondents said having a will or living trust was important.
  • 40 percent of those same respondents actually had a will or living trust.
  • 57 percent of US adults do not have estate planning documents such as a will or living trust.
  • Older Americans are the most likely demographic to have an estate plan in place: 66% of those age 65 or older have a will or living trust, which is in sharp contrast to 21% of 18-34 olds, 38% of 35 to 44-year-olds, and a mere 40% of those between 45 and 54 years have one.

Reasons for not having a will?

  • 54%: “haven’t gotten around to it”
  • 23%: “don’t have enough assets to leave to anyone”
  • 6%: “I don’t know how”
  • 6%: “it’s too expensive”
